Often people ask me this question. But this depends mainly in the kind of trip you are planning and your needs.
For example, if you are staying in an all inclusive resort that has adventure, relax, food, and many others and you plan to be in it the whole time.
But if you are like me, ''an explorer''; wont like to be on the same spot during vacations.
Costa Rica, regardless if is the city, north pacific, Caribbean side, has a lot to offer, and I mean A LOT.
That's when renting a car in Costa Rica becomes an option.
In Costa Rica there a is a lot of transportation options, like bus, taxi, private vans but depends on how many trips you plan, finally you will pay more on this. Just as an example, a trip one way from Liberia to Arenal Volcano Area could me no less than $160 USD that's to your next logging destination. But (same question) are you planning to stay there the rest of your trip?
I don't think so.
If you make your math, $160 + $160 (assuming you flight out of Liberia Airport) its $320 UDS.
The average cost for a compact sedan is $300 per week, coverage and fees included.
So when you think about transportation options, Renting a car in Costa Rica is one of the strongest options.
Having the freedom to travel around the country, traveling without any schedule, taking your time to stop and take as many pictures as you like or stopping in the small towns on the way to try their local food, buy handcrafts and why not, get mix with the local people.
Main questions when deciding your trip transportation needs:
Does my hotel, house, condo, offers transportation from and to the airport?
Will I have someone to meet me at arrivals?
Am I planning to stay in the hotel, house, the whole trip?
How adventurous I am?
How will I get to the different attractions?
Whats my transportation budget?
